Botox 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment

Botox smooths expression lines by relaxing overactive muscles – frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. Treatments take minutes, involve tiny pinches, and have minimal downtime. Expect early softening in 2–3 days and full results by 10–14 days, lasting about 3 to 4 months. With smart dosing and skilled technique, results look refreshed, not frozen.

What Botox Does (and Doesn’t)

  • Targets dynamic wrinkles: glabella (“11s”), forehead lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, chin dimpling, downturned corners, gummy smile.
  • Not ideal for deep folds from volume loss (nasolabial folds). That’s typically a filler conversation.

Pre-Appointment Checklist

  • 5–7 days before: If approved by your doctor, pause blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo). Avoid alcohol 24 hours pre-visit.
  • 3–5 days before: Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen if your primary doctor agrees; acetaminophen is fine.
  • Day of: Clean skin, hydrated, bring questions. If prone to bruising, ask about ice/arnica.

What Happens During Treatment

  • Mapping: You frown, raise brows, and smile; injection points are marked.
  • Injections: Quick pinches; most rate discomfort a 2 to 3 out of 10.
  • Finish: Mild redness or bumps fade within an hour. You can return to most daily activities.

Safety and Red Flags

  • Common, mild, brief: Redness, pinpoint bruises, headache, temporary heaviness.
  • Less common: Brow or eyelid droop (avoid rubbing/heavy workouts after).
  • Avoid if pregnant/breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular disorders, active infection, or known allergy. Call your provider for significant swelling, asymmetry, or visual changes.

Results, Dosing, and Cost

  • Timeline: Softening in 2 to 3 days; peak at 10 to 14 days; lasts ~ 3 to 4 months.
  • Typical ranges: Forehead 8 to 20 units; glabella 15 to 25; crow’s feet 6 to 12 per side. Small tweaks use fewer.
  • Pricing: Usually per unit. Ask for transparent dosing and a personalized plan.

Aftercare (First 24 to 48 Hours)

  • Do: Stay upright 4 hours, use gentle expressions, ice lightly if needed.
  • Don’t: Rub/massage treated areas, wear tight headwear, do intense workouts, or use saunas/facials for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Recheck: Evaluate at day 14; touch-ups are most accurate then.
